Redefining Medicine

Putting the power of YOUR health

back into YOUR hands

Meet Jen & Barclay

We have been in clinical practice as acupuncturists and herbal medicine practitioners for over twenty years. Working with thousands of people over the years, we have developed understandings of health that we want to share with as many people as possible.

Instead of having people come in to the clinic to be “fixed,” we want to teach people our understanding of health and what they can do to take care of themselves. Chinese Medicine provides a new perspective as well as the tools to transform your life.

We encourage taking a proactive stance in health maintenance, emphasizing prevention and the cultivation of a balanced lifestyle that is in harmony with natural cycles around us.

We have witnessed that the greatest changes in our patients’ health comes from making small shifts in daily patterns to create dramatic long-lasting changes. Our goal is to educate and empower people with this perspective and share simple tools and techniques to take control of your health.

Jen Calvert

Jen is passionate about empowering individuals to take control of their own health. She is drawn to Chinese Medicine’s unique perspective that health is a natural state of being and that stress, whether physical, mental or emotional, can create imbalances that manifest as symptoms. These symptoms are signs that adjustments need to be made to regain balance and restore harmony.

Understanding that our mind, emotions, and spirit, as well as the environment in which we live, all contribute to the fabric of our physical health, invites us to look at our bodies in a new way. Jen specializes in assisting you in this process by creating customized treatment programs that focus on the whole person in order to return the body to its natural state of health. You will find that Chinese Medicine provides powerful tools, that are effective, affordable and can be utilized from the comfort of your home.

Jen graduated from Bastyr University in 2000, with a concentration in Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine. She went on to pursue graduate studies at the Seattle Institute of East Asian Medicine because this school offered specialization in herbal prescriptions. The doctors at this institution are well known for their extensive knowledge and application of “Shang Han Lun” formulas, from a medicinal text written around 220 AD. This ancient text is one of the oldest complete clinical textbooks in the world that has been continuously utilized up to the present day. This legacy of being utilized for 1800 years speaks to its efficacy.

As a practitioner of this Traditional Asian Medicine, Jen has witnessed that dramatic improvement in her patients’ health came from making small shifts in daily patterns to create long lasting change. Proper movement, rest and food are the foundations to good health. Jen believes herbal medicine is foundational to her practice. Targeted herbal formulas are effective, affordable and can be utilized when needed to support your body in times of physical, mental or emotional stress. It is for this reason that she is dedicated to her practice to herbal prescriptions and lifestyle coaching.

She looks forward to sharing her knowledge of herbal medicine with you and empowering you with the unique view of health that Traditional Asian Medicine has to offer.

Barclay Calvert

Barclay has been fascinated with biology and the life-sciences since he was young, and graduated from the University of Washington with a pre-med biology degree as well as a degree in Comparative History of Ideas. Before his planned application to medical school, he did work in infectious disease genetics and then a medical program in Ecuador, but Barclay's passion has always been the human body-mind, Eastern philosophies, and different healing paradigms.

Particularly interested in family medicine, general practice, preventive medicine, and how to help people to be more healthy and happy, Barclay turned to Chinese medicine as a better fit for him to practice medicine as he was called to it. Discovering Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) was a revelation. TCM focuses on the person, not just the disease, it teaches how to live in harmony with our environment, it has a holistic understanding of the mind, body and spirit, and how to live longer, be healthier, and avoid illness, as well as gentle, non-invasive time-tested treatment methods.

Barclay found TCM to be sophisticated particularly in the areas modern western medicine is lacking, and so Barclay studied at the Seattle Institute of East Asian Medicine (SIEAM) instead of conventional medical school, receiving his Master's Degree and license to practice Chinese Medicine in 2004. He chose SIEAM for its small size, its apprenticeship-based program, the chance to study with experienced masters, and the strong training in herbal medicine.

Barclay sees medicine in general, and Chinese Medicine in particular, to be a life-long learning, and he continues his studies in order to better serve his patients. He has particularly focused on the “classic school” of Chinese Herbal Medicine, studying with a number of well-known teachers. To deepen his understanding of the mind and its role in health and happiness, he has been studying hypnotherapy, most recently under Paul Mckenna. He has also continued to dive deeper into Qi Gong, becoming more aware all the time of how important integrating breathing, movement and mindfulness are to our well-being. He recently completely a teacher-training program in the Qi Gong 18 system, and continues to study and practice.

As his experience with acupuncture, herbal medicine, and these various self-care techniques has grown, he has felt the responsibility of teaching these to others, so that they may remember how we can find balance, listen to and trust our own innate wisdom, and become aware of the path of healing and health that we are all traveling.
